Despite the title of this blog you couldn’t help but read this could you!
Our minds are curious and I am guessing that the following questions played through your mind,
“Why shouldn’t I read this?”
“What does it say?”
“What is it about?”
“What will happen if I do read it?”
The way in which our brain works with negative statements like this is interesting. If I say to you, don’t think about a pink elephant! I bet you pictured a pink elephant didn’t you?
In order to process that statement we have to first think of a pink elephant and then delete it, so actually it is counterproductive.
The other day I was in a coffee shop sitting next to a mum and dad with their little daughter who was dressed in the most beautiful dress with her hair immaculately done, no doubt off to a party of some sorts. The family’s drinks arrived and the waiter served the drinks, the little girls face was a picture of delight at the sight of her large strawberry milkshake with cream and strawberry sauce, topped of course with hundreds and thousands! I listened as her mother said to her ‘Whatever you do, do not blow bubbles through the straw’
I will leave it to your imagination as to what happened next!
The unconscious mind is very obedient and will follow instructions and directions given whether they are productive and beneficial or not. The results we achieve good, bad or indifferent in situations are based on what we are focussed on in that moment.
When we are thinking thoughts of fear, self-doubt, worry, criticism, judgment, anger, frustration, anxiety, negativity and other disempowering fight, flight or freeze thoughts, we are not focused on what we want.
When we are thinking about the money we don’t have, the job we lost, the skills we don’t have, the payments we can’t afford, and the sacrifices we have to make, we are focused on what we don’t want.
When we are focused on what we don’t want, that is all we see, and our ideas and decisions are based on what we don’t want.
When we know what we want, we give ourselves the ability to imagine new possibilities and generate ideas on how to be and what to do or say in each moment to make what we want a reality.
In my experience, most of us are not aware of what we want in each moment. We haven’t even thought about it. We are busy reacting—in fight, flight, or freeze—and not focused on what we want. And most times, particularly in challenging times, we are focused on what we don’t want – and we don’t even know it!
When we start to ask ourselves the right questions and look at want we really want, we find that remarkable things start to happen!
Give yourself a moment and ask yourself “What do I really want?” “How do I want to feel?” and notice as your amazing unconscious mind gives the answers!
