How to become a hypnotherapist?
There are many different courses available from online diplomas, 5 days intensive to year-long courses, so how do you know which is the right one for you, and with no governing body it can make choosing a course a bit of a minefield.
There are courses that offer more traditional classical hypnotherapy training whilst others offer more of a rapid approach to therapy. When I first started out I did several different courses and eventually found the approach that worked best for me.
In the field of hypnosis, the subject of accreditation is a somewhat controversial topic. Being an unregulated industry there aren’t many unbiased central governing bodies which have stringent processes for membership. For example, Psychologists have the British Psychological Society and Counsellors/Psychotherapists have the UK Council for Psychotherapy and British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
There are many awarding bodies and to the untrained eye there does appear to be official bodies of membership, however, many of these bodies are set up by the same people that run their training courses and so are totally biased to their own courses. However, I do recognise that external validation is necessary when teaching new therapists so at Hypnosis Deconstructed we are currently undergoing accreditation with two of the leading unbiased hypnotherapy organisations.
I have always enjoyed teaching, coaching and mentoring others in career so it was a natural progression for me to do this in the field of hypnosis and coaching. I met Paul Gibson on a training course in a village near Wales, hundreds of miles from home when we found out we were practically neighbours. We’d both realised that most training either teach you to be analytical or more NLP based with not much in between. A modern trend being the latest Holy Grail technique which was essentially classical techniques bundled together under a whizzy name. I, myself, fell foul to a few of these training realising that it’s just tried and tested techniques bundled together for the robotic therapist to lather, rinse and repeat.
That’s when Hypnosis Deconstructed was born! It’s not a terribly exciting idea, we teach you what works! The best of analytical and the best of the NLP/tapping/eye movement therapies. Teaching you about the individual techniques and how to create your own protocol for each client, each session.
We will teach you how to use the client as a script, the importance of being present with the client, what intention is and many more. You won’t find any scripts on any of our courses. No student of ours will need a script!
Of course, I would recommend that you look at Hypnosis Deconstructed if you are looking for a hypnosis course as we believe thorough, effective therapy examines the power of the mind and looks at the person as a creation of the past.
Knowledge and empowerment are the cornerstones to the experiential based training that we provide.
My advice when looking for a hypnotherapy course is to research the content and syllabus, seek out the trainers that deliver the course and discuss their approach.
How long does it take to become a hypnotherapist?
So you are interested in becoming a hypnotherapist… the chances are you’ve done a little research and you like the idea of helping people by utilising the power of the human mind. Hypnotherapy can be a very rewarding and lucrative career but it’s not always clear to understand how to get started.
Well answering that is like how long is a piece of string, with no regulation the truth is that after doing an online course in a matter of hours someone can set themselves up as a hypnotherapist. There is such a vast array of courses out there, (you can even get a diploma on Groupon for £19) that it is inevitable that there are some that are really bad (I have done some of these myself). So not all courses you see are going to be of an equal standard
In general, the course can range for weekends, to 5-day intensives to 1-2 years with many variations in between.
I would recommend that you look for a course that meets UK Core Curriculum guidelines which suggests a minimum of 250 hours and that it covers a wide range of approaches. When researching your options seek out some previous students and see what they have to say about the course and also make contact with the trainers and see if they are the right fit for you. In my opinion, a good trainer is one that is passionate about their subject and live and love what they do!
If you are new to the world of hypnotherapy (brace yourself you are in for a wild ride that will literally change your life) then take a broad approach to your learning from different sources, there is a wealth of great books and videos that you can learn from.
At my training academy with Paul Gibson, Hypnosis Deconstructed hypnosis courses will teach you a wide range of clinical techniques from eye movement therapies, NLP, hypnosis, parts therapy, submodalities and many more. Using the diagnostic techniques and listening skills we teach you will be able to put together your own protocol of working for each client, for each session. Specialist courses for working in specialist areas such as weight loss, addictions and anxiety will also teach tried and tested methods of working with presentations of the mindset of the client in the relevant issue.
We teach what works. Years of clinical practice have given us the experience to ignore the latest trendy methods and to concentrate on the depth of the human mind and to use thorough methods for successful treatment.
Our training teaches you to be with your client, not do to your client. The human mind is complex and the techniques we teach combined with an understanding of how the mind works offer a thorough working system for maximum impact in your client’s healing process.
Our courses are short and concise without any unnecessary fillers. I have been on multiple courses and found myself mentally screaming “Just teach me what works!”. Well, it is with his premise that Hypnosis Deconstructed was born, We deconstruct your client and teach the components thoroughly so you can put together your own system of working that’s unique and individual to your client. Our courses are intense and packed with information, a lot of the theory is in the comprehensive manuals we provide along with detailed descriptions of the techniques and methods.
We teach you to listen. The story the client gives you is the book of their life and is full of clues as to why they’re having difficulties at this present time. We will show you how unmet human needs when combined with the developing mind, can bring behaviour and habits that are unwanted in that person’s life. It is also important to understand how trauma can create multi-faceted emotional symptomology that needs respect and a competent therapist in order to effectively release it on all levels
Our courses aren’t bogged down by an intellectual theory which is only of use in the classroom. We teach you what you need to know to be a thorough, knowledgeable therapist with a broad range of effective rapid techniques for thorough change.
As an accredited trainer with the UK Hypnosis Academy I also run weekend hypnosis courses teaching rapid hypnosis with Kinetic Shift.
Kinetic Shift is a rapid therapeutic tool for facilitating relief from a range of issues from PTSD, trauma, anxiety, fears phobias and so much more.
